How Interesting Is Social Media?

New York-based VC, Fred Wilson has shared his vision for social media:

Every single human being posting their thoughts and experiences in any number of ways to the Internet

This is a clear vision, no doubt; and Fred says, “bullshit” to anyone that responds by saying that most people don’t have anything interesting to say.   However, I think there’s a lot of truth in this criticism.  I wonder how much time Fred spends hanging out on new social network, Seesmic. If you don’t know it, Seesmic is like a video version of Twitter.   Now, that’s going to sound either like a fabulous idea, or something truly, truly horrible… depending on what you think of Twitter.  Don’t pre-judge it though. To let you make up your own mind, I’ve linked to an example below….

Yesterday, Kevin Rose, founder of Digg, Revision3, and Pownce, put a profile up on Seesmic.  Not surprisingly, several people responded.  This is one of the replies he received.  Kevin obviously found it funny…  which, I have to admit, it is ;-)   And I’m sure the guy in the video (and others in the thread) is a nice guy…  but by most people’s standards, this thread does not represent an interesting conversation.   Each to their own, I guess.  I imagine that, if Fred sees the conversation thread that replies to Kevin’s first Seesmic post, he’ll be inviting all the participants round to his house for a party… cos he finds these kind of conversations so… to coin a term… “fascinating”.
