That's a good point, Asam. Apple's strategy of retaining responsibility for software updates on iPhones is a great one. It gives them a genuine advantage in the market place over their competition which doesn't seem to care about the robustness and stability of their devices; an advantage that is only going to become more important with time.

That the rest of the mobile business doesn't seem to understand this speaks volumes about their lack of understanding of software.

Paul, that's been the criticism for the past year. However, did you see the totally revised plans for JavaFX Mobile that were announced last week? Sun are claiming it's a more light-weight technology (it doesn't need its own OS anymore), and that the major handset manufacturers are targeting JavaFX at feature phones.

JavaFX Mobile is not going to make it on cellphones that people want to buy. It's too resource hungry and slow.

[...] Simon Brocklehurst does a great job of deconstructing the Blackberry & iFunds, and I encourage you to read his analysis. “All the opportunities, though, probably need Apple and RIM to deliver significant growth in device sales, from where they are now,” he writes, in what is clearly an understatement. Brocklehurst points out that there is a whole lot of other platforms, and the developer are going to gravitate towards the largest market opportunities. [...]

Well it also looks like the SDK is very easy to develop for. The BB kit looks to be a bit of a cludge. It's not just the money it is also which is the most interesting for the geeks to develop on.

The problem with feature phone market being fragmented is only a problem for other platforms, not for Apple. Apple isn't just trying to go for the smart phone market with its SDK, it's been thinking about the feature phone market as all current 100 million odd iPod owners are a target for Apple, with the possibility of further configurations of the iPhone, in addition to the much anticipated 3G version. iPhone nano etc..
