Netbeans 6.1 Released - MultiLanguage Support Enhanced

Netbeans, the free, open source, software development environment from Sun Microsystems, has just reached version 6.1 (see the Netbeans 6.1 release notes for detailed info).  If you’re one of those that hasn’t looked seriously at Netbeans in a while, I think it’s worth another look: it’s now a genuinely world-class IDE (for best results, make sure to run it on the most up-to-date production version of Java available).  While the latest version of Netbeans is a really fabulous Java IDE  for developing both client (desktop and mobile) and server-side Java,  Sun has been steadily adding support for other languages in recent releases.  For example, Netbeans makes a good Ruby/JRuby (including Rails) and C/C++ IDE.

New for version 6.1 is all-new, completely redesigned support for JavaScript (whether it’s standalone JavaScript, or embedded in other files e.g.  HTML). You get: syntax highlighting; code completion; and, importantly for any modern IDE, refactoring.  So now, if you’re developing a browser-based web application, you don’t need to drop out of Netbeans into another tool when you’re writing the JavaScript parts of your app.   Support for PHP in 6.1 is coming soon, and is currently at the early-access stage.

And, of course, Netbeans cross-platform. It runs on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris.  You can download Netbeans from the main Netbeans site.
