silverlight only runs on intel based macs... and there's no interaction with its space outside its window, ie deep-linking, I really think silverlight needs to be seen as sticking a fork in Java. it will not be what flash is if there's no javascript interaction.. we'll have to see if it sticks or not.

Silverlight is marketed as a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in, by definition then it must support the iPhone/iTouch platform, if it doesn't but delivers Silverlight on other mobile platforms then it can rightly be taken to court for anti-competitive behaviour which I'm sure it would want to avoid. I don't see how Apple would care about any revenue from a plug-in, Microsoft is an existing partner. There is an excellent opportunity for Microsoft and it's MacBU to develop and sell mini Office versions which would complement it's desktop Office 2008. Microsoft are already the biggest Mac developers so they would be foolish to miss this opportunity.

Just been watching Steve Ballmer at Mix. He said that there haven't been extensive discussions with Steve Jobs about Silverlight on iPhone.

He also made the interesting point that Apple might not be too interested in welcoming royalty-free run-times onto the iPhone platform, given that Apple wants to take 30% of revenues for all rich apps developed for iPhone. The truth is, though, given that Apple bears all the costs associated with hosting, provisioning, billing etc, and you get your app in the Apple market place, 70% is actually a reasonable deal.

You might be right - I'm not sure. If it's technically easy enough, I guess MS might do it. I'd have thought they'd prefer to partner with Apple though, to make sure everything is tuned optimally, and maybe get Apple to integrate Silverlight into Safari etc.

It might not matter though. The iPhone SDK looks interesting enough to gain a critical mass of developer mindshare on its own.

There is nothing for Apple to consider regarding Silverlight, it's already available for Mac OS X. It's a very small port for Microsoft to deliver a Silverlight plugin for iPhone. Same goes with Flash, Jobs has said current Flash Player to big for iPhone's current processor, so it's up to Adobe to develop and release a light version for iPhone Safari.

Will be interesting to watch which of the two companies 'sees the light' first...
