On The Latest Mac OS X Leopard Build…
Here’s some developer perspective I’ve been given from someone using the latest build of Leopard - the next version of Mac OS X:
- 3-D Dock - Who cares?
- Coverflow - A bit confusing
- Quick Look - Close to magic, very impressed with this feature
- Overall performance - lots of things speeded up. Spaces, Spotlight and Stacks all very quick
- Java - fast, integrated with Leopard look and feel, but still a bit buggy. Not quite there yet
- Bottom line - not a revolution, but it is the best desktop available amongst all the hardware/OS platforms out there. Makes Linux desktops especially look old-fashioned and “bolted on”

I’m surprised that someone who’s a developer would even look at the Dock, they should try out Quicksilver. Any seasoned Mac user would customise their desktop experience anyway. The default settings are set up in a way to make it easy and consistent for switchers and casual users.
QuickLook is the implementation of Coverflow in the Finder, but CoverFlow is a deep system-wide technology that combines Core Graphics and Core Image. The sexiest part is the combination of Coverflow with Remote Admin features, and this is ground work, in my opinion for a much more beefed up dot mac service and cloud computing. Then it’s up to Apple and Google when they decide the time is right to revel the plans. If I was Steve Balmer, I’d be a very worried little monkey and stop sitting on the universal binary of Office 2008 for Mac OS X. The longer he tries to stop the inevitable, the more it’ll hurt MS in the long run. I always find it fun asking MacBU what the current excuse is for not implementing audio and video support in Messenger…
