Sun Announces JavaFX - Positions As Flash / Flex & Silverlight Competitor

Update - I’m talking about JavaFX Script here… actually, JavaFX is more than that (more on the whole of JavaFX here).

Sun is announcing JavaFX today (its code name was F3). The company is positioning it as a competitor to Flash/Flex, Apollo and Silverlight. JavaFX is a scripting language for the Java platform. Having followed this project for a while, there’s no doubt that it’s possible to code complex user interfaces pretty quickly by using F3 JavaFX.

If you haven’t seen JavaFX yet, and you’re interested in finding out more, I recommend checking out Chris Oliver’s blog - it has lots of examples. It’s a great technology - it fits in with the way a lot of people like to build user interfaces. However, unless the the points I made in a recent blog entry - why Java applets failed - are addressed, there will be some barriers to adoption, at least in the browser.
