Why Are Cell Phone QWERTY Keypads So Bad?

Nokia E61

I was looking at mobile phones with full QWERTY keypads the other day. I looked at devices made my Nokia, HTC, and RIM amongst others, and was struck by one thing: how awful the keypads were.

What was so bad about the keypads on these devices? Not enough feedback from key-presses; and no gaps (or not big enough) between keys, sometimes making it tricky to hit the right key. Obviously, there are some physical size limitations, but surely the keypads on these devices don’t have to be so bad…

Data entry is holding back the use of the mobile Internet. I hope some companies out there are trying to raise the bar. “Useable” isn’t good enough. What we need is “easy to use”…

I belive that cell phones are what cose 75% of all the crashes in the world and that doesn’t lead to anything good
