Apple To Launch True MS Media Center Competitor At WWDC?

Back on January 9th, I wrote that rumours were circulating that Apple was about to launch a true competitor to Microsoft Windows Media Center. Almost seven months have passed since then. So… I’m wondering if the new product is ready yet? Actually, I’m hearing on the grapevine that it is. If that’s right, the World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) taking place next week might be the time and place for the big launch.

Now, if you put an Apple Media Center together with the anticipated launch of a subscription-based rental model for “iTunes Movies”, you could have quite an interesting platform for delivering movies into the home…

All I can say is that they’ve done huge amount of work on gesture interfaces..

But just look at all new Intel processors already shipped and delivered to its vendor companies, missing bits in Apple’s Pro Machine to replace G5 desktop will come first, dual dual core’s - dunno what they’ll do with the Woodcrest quad core’s, maybe go in the Xserves - then there’s the expected Core 2 Duo mobility chip, Merom, faster, cooler, that’ll be in MacBook Pro rev 2, non frying egg version :)

Hardware easier to predict now, coz can judge from Intel’s roadmap, really interesting stuff will be Leopard Public Preview - Of course, delays in Vista means they could try copy stuff, again, lol…

Some products being released at Mac Expo in Paris later in September, Apple done their sums and Europe market expanding faster then US market now….

I hope Steve Jobs does more than say, “And here is a new Mac with a new Intel chip in it. It’s faster than the previous model.” That is getting very boring now. As is, “Here’s an update on iPod sales - compared to this time last year, sales are up” and “Here’s an update on iLife, look how easy it is to add a photo to a web page.”

If they come up with a Media Center computer, and/or a Video iPod with a new form factor, and/or show some new features in their OS that are compelling, at least that would be slightly interesting.

Rumors been speculating large screen ipod with gesture interface, wifi, ebook/pdf reader - and then theres that level 4 data centre they aquired. Rumors been based on Apple patents over last years…..

But this is WWDC, so main focus is Mac OS X , 10.5 aka Leopard, should put another 3-4 year lead over MS…..

We’ll see. I’m betting on the launch of a Media Center type machine. Owning the home media network is something Apple has a real shot at (despite MS having current advantages with Windows Media Center and XBox 360). They have no chance of owning the business desktop. Ever.
