What Sun Microsystems And Others Can Learn From Dell…

Sun Microsystems Inc and other computer hardware vendors could really learn a lot from Dell Inc. It’s pretty hard to buy from companies like Sun. You need to book appointments to see pre-sales experts, and talk to value-added resellers etc. Not that these guys don’t do a good job. It’s just that sometimes, you know what you want, and just want it delivered as soon as possible.
On the other hand, it’s so easy to buy from Dell, it’s not even funny. A few days ago, I put in order for a 24inch widescreen flat panel monitor. An hour later, I checked the on-line tracking system, and saw it had already been despatched from the warehouse in Ireland. The next day, the delivery people called to arrange delivery the following day in England. Now that’s what I call service!
Oh, and it’s a great screen by the way! I highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a 24inch monitor.

Steve,
The link for the UK Sun store is:

As you can see - the range of equipment you can buy is much more limited than the US Sun store. It’s getting better though. Last time I checked, you couldn’t buy *any* servers - there were only workstations for sale. Now you can buy opteron-based servers. But that’s all.
