I Wonder - Do Microsoft People Ever Use Java Apps?

We all know that Microsoft hasn’t had the most successful of relationships with Java. But that’s all in the past now. I was having a conversation with someone today, that reminded me of a conversation I had with someone from Microsoft a few years ago. The Microsoft guy wanted to meet with me to discuss potential opportunities for Microsoft in the Life Sciences (I’m a biotech guy, as well as a software guy). He was very enthusiastic about what we were doing. I said to him that I didn’t think that his bosses at Microsoft would be interested in what we were doing, because we developing using Java. I was right.

But, now that .NET is established as a platform, I wonder if things have changed? I don’t mean: would Microsoft developers ever use Java? That might be taking things a bit far ;-) But, I do wonder whether Microsoft has softened in its attitude towards Java. For example, are Microsoft employees allowed to hava Java installed on their computers, or is there an outright ban? It would be interesting to know…

I haven’t heard of MS employees not allowed to run Java apps in fact it would make total sense for some of them to run it to see what kind of pain it gives users. I personally don’t run it because I’ve never had pleasant experience running Java on Windows plus there’s no specific apps I need to run even though I don’t know how the Java Update got into my systray.
