We'll see. I don't think these memos are all that important. In a software company (and other types of high-tech business), the truth is that the business usually flies or dies because of the work of a few key people. Sometimes these key people are senior management. More often, it's the work that's done by the "top talent" on the ground that really matters. In the case of a software company - "on the ground" means developers. These key people are really the heart of any company.

If Microsoft succeeds in reinventing itself, it will be because it provides a great environment for its best developers to do great work; and because it persuades the heart of the company not to just walk out the door and join Google or a start-up.

I believe the battle for this space is going to be a bloodbath with many companies being eaten or dying. Microsoft is going to go through some MAJOR culture shock responding to these memos. If their corporate cultural arteries are too hard, a massive stroke and ultimately death may be the result.
