One Thing Missing From Free IDEs: Roundtrip UML Class Diagrams

The last few years have seen great strides in the availability of free (as in beer) graphical development environments. Netbeans and Eclipse being the most important for Java developers. However, there’s one important feature that’s missing from these two leading free tools; something that I think developers would find massively useful. And that something is full rountrip UML Class Diagram editing.

In terms of helping developers that use free tools be more productive, giving them a free tool to help them think at the level of the Class would be a massive boon. Of course, it needs to be the real thing: that means the editing needs to be fully roundtrip, so that diagrams are always in sync with source code and vice versa.

Now that Oracle JDeveloper is available for free, and includes UML support, it might be nice for the Netbeans and Eclipse guys to start thinking about adding a bit of good UML support to their respective products too.
